Lagos State governor, Babatunde Fashola has handed over the new Area ‘C’ Surulere police command headquarters to the state police commissioner, Mr. Cornelius Aderanti, yesterday.

The three-storey building situated along Funsho Williams Avenue, Surulere has almost all the facilities the police needed to carry out their activities, effectively.

The facilities include CCTV, forensic room, finger print room, interrogation room with cameras, cameras office, sufficient communication equipment, gym, area commander’s quarters, separate and beautiful male and female cells, among others.

In his address to the audience, Fashola said as a lawyer he had been visiting the old area command and saw the condition in which the police were working and felt disappointed.

Fashola said he had been releasing suspects from the command long time ago but never had the premonition that he would become a governor.

He described the event as symbolic because it is the kind of dream he had for the state and Nigeria.

The governor showered encomium on policemen and appealed to Nigerians to give them their maximum support.

He asked how many Nigerians both Christians and Muslims remembered to give ram and rice during Christmas and Sallah celebrations to the police.

He said while people were sleeping in the night in their rooms devoid of mosquitoes the police would be awake on the roads and streets to secure lives and property.

He recalled the painful tragedy that led to the bombing and burning of the former Area command over eight years ago when Soldiers and police clashed which led to the killings of many people and destruction of property at the scene.

He said the Inspector general of police, Abba Suleiman said he wanted more of this edifice and equipment but quickly added that the responsibility to equip and maintain the police lies with the Federal government.

He said the State government is building five of such building but three would soon be completed. The three area commands are Area ‘M’ Idimu, Area ‘J’ Elemoro, and area ‘L’ Ilashe.

He said his government also renovated police stations including Orile, Ebute Ero, Makoko, Ikorodu, Denton, and also many police posts.

Fashola named the new command building after Alhaji Gafari Oluwole Tinubu.

The Inspector general of police, Mr Suleiman Abba was represented by the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police in charge of Logistics and Supply, Mr. Mamman Tsafe.

Showering encomium on Fashola, Tsafe said when he was assistant inspector general of police in charge of Zone 2, Onikan headquarters, in Lagos, he said if Nigeria has 10 Fasholas things would have been very effective and people would be efficient.

Tsafe said Abba told him to ask for more assistance for the police from the State. He said most barracks in the state were in bad shape.

When this reporter asked Tsafe if those whose families were killed or/ and property destroyed were compensated, he said ‘honestly, I don’t know. I cannot say what I don’t know’.

The command commissioner of police, Mr. Cornelius Aderanti said he was overwhelmed with joy and excitement, adding that he seized the opportunity to thank Fashola for the beautiful edifice which is adjudged the most beautiful Area command in Africa. He described the building as the most beautiful police command he had set his eyes on after traveling far and wide in the world.
